i own an ibis alibi hardtail and a santa cruz superlight instead.

almost all of my old riding buddies have fled san francisco for oakland.

i really don't like riding by myself, especially after dark. my girlfriend broke her collarbone the fourth time she went out with me, so she's very reluctant to ride off road nowadays.

who wants to do some rides in golden gate park after work on weekdays? and maybe a run or two to the headlands? you'd better be 4-20 friendly, that's for sure and you'd better be ready to ride with a man who hasn't been putting out intense efforts in a while. even though i raced four seasons at the beginner/sport level, i am not ready to hammer to high heaven until my body becomes used to this kind of abuse again, if it ever will.

i have a full on set of lights for night rides, as well. back in the day, me and my boys didn't fuck around and we would hit the trail during all four seasons, night and day.

those days are over.

i'm not a complete slug however, i still commute a half hour each way to work day in and day out. i just miss the thrill of off road riding and the camraderie that comes along with riding with like minded individuals.

fi you're interested, PM me or post in this thread. i'm usually home from work by five thirty-quarter to six and ready to ride by six fifteen.

that's GOLDEN GATE PARK, kids, or THE HEADLANDS. i'm not even going to think about barting my bikes to the east bay. oh, don't forget the part about 4-20 FRIENDLY, too.

i posted this one as a blog last sunday, i thought that you bay area mountain bikers might like it...

JULIA BLIB BLIB is back to work in the tiny the army surplus store on haight street after taking two months off with her broken clavicle. that meant i'd have to fend for myself this fine sunny early january sunday afternoon, and i was determined NOT to sink my sorry ass into the sofa and waste the day away finding new ways of affecting the Buffalo Bills Four Super Bowl Revenge, or watching wild card pro football gmes broadcast live out of stadiums far, far away from the Flying Buffalo Ranch in san francisco.

the sky was too blue and the sun was too warm on my skin for any of that meatheaded noise.

no, i thought, i'll take the Dog Dick Red War Pig across the bridge for some off-road cycling fun. lord only knows how long its been since i've pedalled across the golden gate bridge on my own for a two hour self flagellation fest up and down the sometimes painfully steep two mile long fire roads in marin county. i knew, however after the first fifteen minutes on the bike that pounding out a twenty five mile route up over conzelman road, down into miwok stables via the old springs trail and back over the bobcat and marincello fire roads was going to be quite a challenge. my lungs and quads repeatedly asked me in pitiful whining tones why i did'nt pack another fat bowl, flip on the playstation and sink into my normal sunday afternoon maintenance stoner stupor.

i ignored the pain in my legs and my racing heart while i splashed though the mud puddles in the trails leading past the general's old house in the presidio.

over the crowded golden gate bridge i plodded on the War Pig, narrowly avoiding having my rather wide riser bars make contact with oblivious roadies on their expensive titanium and carbon fiber steeds, until i was chatting with my old friend bernie in the parking lot just to the north of the golden gate bridge. after shooting the shit for a few minutes with my old riding and racing buddy i turned the War Pig left on to conzelman road, and started the mile long journey up that tourist congested blacktop leading to the coastal trail, and High Speed Fire Road Heaven.

it's usually about a third of the way up conzelman that i begin to hit my groove on the twenty seven pound dual suspension War Pig-as i've passed my fortieth birthday and spend more time at home eating bacon wrapped pork loins with blib blib, i've noticed that my warm up time on the bike has increased considerably. at any rate, by the time i reached the Y intersection of the coastal fire trail and conzelman road, my legs and lungs were contentedly beating out a steady, humming tune from my meaty knobby tires.

lots of mountain bikers disdain the thrill of blasting own wide fire roads at high speeds-they say that there's no challenge in riding on a dirt fire road that's wide and smooth enough for the park police to drive their crown victorias on. those riders probably haven't spent a lot of time in marin county after a big winter rain storm, when the rainwater draining from the coastal mountains forms large ruts in the fire access roads, some of which are a foot and a half wide two feet deep and more often than not filled with cold, fast moving water. picking the right line on such fire roads requires skill and brains, and the consequences of making a bad choice might result in a helicopter rescue by the united states park service, which is often accompanied by a hefty bill.

how can anybody professing a love for all things human powered and two wheeled dismiss the sensation of high speed on any surface?

by the time i reached the bottom of the coastal trail, i was feeling very happy that i'd forsaken the carolina panthers, the high scoring and undefeated virtual buffalo bills and the play station. a quick break at the meadow at the southwest side of rodeo valley allowed me to recharge my batteries with gatorade, luna bars and fragrant herbs after which the War Pig and i set off to challenge the wide open fire roads of gerbode valley.

this is where i decided to cut about five miles out of my ride.

ascending paved roads on a twenty seven pound dual suspension rig equipped with a highly active coil spring suspension fork is one thing, but climbing wet, tacky dirt roads on the same rig is quite another. even though i was telling myself how great it was to be alone and in the beautiful green open hills of coastal california, the twenty five minute climb up the marincello fire road is always miserable for me. the ascent begins innocently enough out of the rodeo valley bordering the northern half of conzelman road, but soon becomes steep and criss crossed with treacherous rain ruts. three or four times i was forced to use the soft, wet outside lines to make room for riders who'd had the sense enough to ride the shorter, steeper miwok fire road into the stables. when i'd steer the war pig into these mushy lines, it felt as if my agressive 2.25 motoraptors had suddenly gone flat.

regardless of the relentless pain in my legs and a reluctant decision to shift the superlight into granny gear, i made it to the top of the ridge where the marincello and bobcat fire roads meet. my original destination of the picturesque miwok stables lay about two downhill miles away, but there was not a chance in hell that would be capabe of extending my range today another five miles given my current state of fitness. the stables with its picnic tables and porta potties would have to wait until another day, i thought, some sunday months in the future when i have built up my range and endurance with these two hour weekend excursions to the wind swept rock outcropping overlooking the sausalito marina.

now was the time to point the War Pig south again, back down the wide, smooth fire road i had used to make this first step in rekindling my love affair with the sport of mountain biking and as a tool to reduce my slowly expanding waist line. this was the part of the ride i loved best, the high speed balls out run back down into the rodeo valley, where the santa cruz War Pig charlie at vision cyclery sold me back in 2001 shows me why i paid almost a thousand dollars for a dog dick red full suspension mountain bike frame. back in the day when i rode rigid hardtails my magnetic bike computers had indicated i'd reached speeds of forty miles an hour wildly pedalling over these washboarded, dusty fire trails-i can only imagine that having four inches of suspension travel at each end of my bike fourteen years later only adds more velocity to what is already an exhilarating rate of speed on a bicycle.

all told, today i might have ridden about twenty miles this afternoon.

gee, i'm going to have to do this again next weekend, weather permitting.

watching pro football is a wonderful pastime, and whipping hapless opponents into whimpering little girlie men with the Playstation Bills is good old fashioned foot stomping fun, but nothing beats the thrill of pedalling the War Pig to breakneck speeds on the wide open fire roads that wind through the bare green coastal hills of southern marin county.

who knows, the sea otter classic is only a few months away.

i've got a few mountain bike racing medals stashed away somewhere...

EVER SO gradually, shekky is finding his way back on to the santa cruz and over the golden gate bridge into the marin headlands with my lunatic bastard bike fanatic neighbor, joe.

five years ago, making three or four hard charging runs up conzelman road, down the the coastal fire trail, which is treacherously rutted near the bottom and out and around the miwok staples used to be an integral part of my existance. i doted over both of my lightweight race ready ibis alibis, read every word of each of the wildly popular major mountain bike rags and generally pretty much was well versed in all aspects of the sport. off road cycling and being a geeky stoner go hand in hand, and for five years shekky was a devoted, pious cycling monk.

then along came The Girl. fast forward to 2001, when i'm slaving away forty hours a week in blue-collar monotony. ten and twelve hour days often precluded joining the Ogre Club on our tuesday and thursday night journeys on the rocky singletrack leading to the summit of hill 88, where we would rest at the old abandoned nike missle site my buddies and i know as Ice Station Zebra. less mountain biking led to more time being spent with the Punk Rock Mafia in dark, sleazy dives like kimo's on polk street, where i met the Girl from Ohio.

dating, sleeping in oakland and nights spend cuddling in bed and watching "while you were out" are not conducive to the mountain bike racing lifestyle.

my riding buddies gradually gave up on reaching me during weekends unless we'd made arranvements earlier during the week. my weight climbed from around one fifty five to about one sixty or so.

fast forward to 2003. my cheerful, bright eyed cherub from canton has fled back to ohio to escape the madness of living on the periphials of oakland gang country, and to pursue a masters in social engineering something or other. spending quality time on my dog dick red dualie is further reduced that spring and summer due to many long hours spent at mozie and jenny bird's birdsnest, furiously working on the carousel numinous project in order to have it completed in time for the fund raising party, to be attended by none other than larry harvey himself. my saddle time is pretty much limited to commuting the Junkie Gauntlet on the venerable ibis and quick sunset jaunts to ocean beach aboard the santa cruz.

my friends are beginning to make comments on how much bigger my belly is becoming.

hey, i'm forty-one years old, i tell them.

once the 2003 burning man project was completed and the madness had passed over lake lahontan for yet another fun-filled summer, i found myself alone suffering up the miwok fire road on saturdays and sundays again, relishing the high speed descent down the old springs double track down into the picturesque miwok stables. i had rediscoved the pure child like joy of just riding my bike for fun, not racing against the clock in a NORBA sanctioned critical mass on wheels at laguna seca, nor a whip cracking training ride with some of my hyper competitive buddies. none of that, my friends, the time i was spending on my big red superlight during the late summer and cold winter afternoons of 2003 may have been the finest hours i've known on two wheels. my bike was well tuned and balanced with a new four inch travel fox fork making coasting down steep, rocky trails infinately more comfortable and entertaining than they'd been on my high strung racing hardtails. even though most of my riding was solo those days, every once and a while my old riding buddies and racing buddies might manage to tear themselves away from the playstation and we'd drive off to our stomping grounds of the late nineties--el corte madera open space preserve, china camp state park or even the soquel demonstration forest just below santa cruz, to deal with the challenge of the braile trail.

fast forward to late 2004, when two of my primary riding partners decide they should relocate across the bay to oakland, for economic reasons.

even though i don't mind riding solo, there are some situations in which i feel cycling alone is not the best decision a rider might make, especially riding in the headlands at night. i'm not so enthusiastic about braving the gutter punk camps and their half-wild pit bulls in golden gate park after the sun sinks over the pacific horizon either, an injured rider might lay unconscious in the bushes ten or twelve hours after a unexpected flying superman over the bars. once my local riding buddies bailed the city, i was left with the choice of being humiliated by crazy pollack joe every other night in the hills across the golden gate bridge, or hanging our with my rock star friend sean trying to score some wild punk rock chick to rub flesh with, since shekky was getting pretty horny after six moths or so without sex.

now when i stepped on a scale, i was shocked to read one seventy.

fast forward to april, 2005

riding my bike recreationally had become almost an alien concept to me. weeknights were spent either alone blasting gangbangers to kingdom come in san andreas with my playstation's controller, or lounging around over at smith's place on mcallister street, smoking dope and drinking cheap beer. every once and a while the old hard core crew would get together and jet across the golden gate to china camp, but those trips were far and few between. my half hour each way daily bike commutes through three of the businest neighborhoods in san francisco were beginning to seriously wear on me, and gearing up for a night ride with the expert boys, bernie and joe seemed like more of a distasteful chore than a pleasure. chasing weird chicks with bad tattoos seemed to become more appealing to me than grinding up two mile fire roads, chasing two riders who are and will always be in far greater shape than i am.

then i met julia, my wonderful half breed honey, blib blib, and staying indoors on cold, foggy august nights got that much easier.

the scale read one eight five just last week.

now, i want to get back on a bike again, and bring my blib blib along with me whenever i can. julia seemed to catch on to the mountain biking thing when i dragged her along with me through the back trails of golden gate park last may on a borrowed low end hardtail with two rubber sticks masquerading as suspension forks. even though she'd not been on a bike for years, much less a mountain bike i was impressed with her balance, aerobic capacity and seemingly natural bike handling skills over moderately challenging terrain. julia rode right over obstacles that might stop other riders at her level of experience right in her tracks and quickly ground her way up steep climbs right beside me where i expected my half pack a day smoker girlfriend to lag somewhat far behind a veteran rider and racer like myself. a new hope arose in my heart that i had finally discoverd a new mountain bike rding buddy as well as a girlfriend and i decided that we should find a decent bike for her as soon as possible.

the neighbor who loaned us the bike was compelled to retreive it from us, to loan to his friend as a playa bike.

my dream of julia and i spending quality time together in the woods on bicycles faded as we busied ourselves with preparations for our trip to burning man.

fast forward to late september, 2005

we've found a bike on cragslist that might seem to be just the bike our blib blib needs, a bright red scwinn mesa or something priced at one hundred and fifty dollars. after counting our pennies and coming to the conclusion that we'd be able to make this purchase together, julia and i eagerly dialed the number provided in the cyber-ad and made arrangements with the seller to pick up the bike. to make a long story shot, dollars and goods were cheerfully excanged, and we were on our way home with a dog dick red steed for my blib bib, the color of which almost exctly matched my muscular santa cruz.

now my girl and i were eager to be back on the trail together again, and after making a trip to the bike doctor on stanyan street to fix minor details overlooked by the seller, our tires were soon churning up the gritty dust in golden gate park again. julia was slowly learning the ins and outs of shifting and braking her bright red aluminum cross country racer and she finally discovered how proper body positioning drastically improves how a mountain bike handles on the trail during a two hour long ride at china camp state park.

wonderful, i thought. maybe after a month or two of riding on the trails of golden gate park, maybe i'll be able to gently coax julia to ride across the golden gate bridge with me, and take on the moderate challenge of climbing conzelman road where it met the fireroad down to the secluded beach at kirby's cove.

unfortunately, blib blib was'nt aware of the braking forces her old school cantilevers on the schwinn were capable of generating during one of our sunday jaunts to the beach in golden gate park, and she pile drived herself in to ground there, breaking her collarbone.

and that's why my girlfriend and i spent this fine december afternoon inside, sleeping, reading and downloading japanse pop music, and the scale reads one hundred and eighty five pounds or so when i step on it. the doctors have told her that her clavicle should be healed by around the end of december, and if my baby is up to it, she's agreed that we'll get her back on a bicycle by gently riding through the park to the paved track at the soccer fields, where we'll build her heart and lungs back up by turning laps around that smooth oval, in and out of the ocean headwind. when we get bored with that, we'll pedal off to the beach and stand by the pacific ocean, listening to the endless crash of the storm driven january waves against the shore.

we'll talk about the summer to come, and plan trips to ohio in july to visit my dear old ancient grandmother, camping trips in lake county where i used to earn medals racing on my ibis and we'll lay the foundation for the burning jewel of 2006, another journey to the desert country of northern nevada for the burning man festival. hopefully, a great deal of the time in between all of the grand things we'll be plotting out during those conversations on the seawall at ocean beach will be punctuated with journeys short and long on our somewhat matching knobby tired steeds, in which i hope to introduce my talented and athletic best friend to the joy of off road cycling, and the inner relaxation that comes with ignoring the pain in your legs while she's surrounded by the natural quiet and wild flower beauty of the marin headlands.

but bringing julia with me up conzeman road and down into the rodeo valley is not a realistic proposition at this time, and it might not ever be. until then, i'll have to be satisfied with forcing myself to stay within sight of pollock joe when the miwok trail gets steep, and i'm fighting the urge to shift down to the granny gear.

Hi... I'm relatively new to the sport and have lost my riding partner. I'd still like to ride every now and then but know I'm unlikely to go on my own. I've been quite a few times in the Headlands (don't know the trail names, but from Tennessee Valley up and over and up again to where you can see the GGB and back to the stables). I'm reasonably strong uphill and enjoy the downhill, but on the whole, I'm sort of a nervous rider (due to a few falls), and I'm new to my clipless pedals. Anyone going on regular rides that sound suitable for my ability?

Thanks,
Eileen
